About Us

Formed in 1998, Waddington Architects has evolved into one of the largest firms of architects, interior designers and landscape architects based in Jersey, providing award-winning, design-led but client-focused professional services across all sectors. We feel we can offer our clients an unparalleled service that integrates architecture, 3-d computer modelling, interior design and landscape architecture from initial concepts through to the finished product. We offer an attractive edge over our competitors by concentrating these skills entirely in-house, as integrated design, and feel that as a result the buildings, interiors and landscapes we produce are even better.
Locally Based

We are fully based in Jersey, and see this as a major strength as we can react very quickly to site problems or design problems face to face.

Interior and Architectural Disciplines Combined

If required we can offer a one-stop-shop which cuts down on potential interface problems and provides a more seamless service. The combined workforce is experienced at working in either discipline, which allows us to respond to tight timescales better than our competitors.

Team Players

We are happy to work within the Design Team in any way, and see ourselves as helpful problem-solvers.

Planning Consents

Over the years we have built-up excellent relationships with both the Planning Officers and the Politicians who control the Planning process. We have a proven track record in gaining planning consents for sensitive or controversial projects by an understanding of relevant States policies and good design.

Commercial Understanding

We understand the commercial reality that surrounds most projects whether large or small. In this respect we are realistic about our role, and prepared to work with clients and developers to achieve the required design in the most practical and cost-effective way.

We also understand that time is money. As such we are used to working within teams to very tight deadlines, and are always prepared to put the effort in to meet the agreed timescales.

“About 40% of the total energy consumption in Europe is used in Buildings” Architecture and construction have a role to play in controlling climate change; and Waddington Architects’ commitment to good design extends to embracing low-energy, sustainable buildings that are environmentally responsible and financially viable.

In our own offices we rely on thick granite walls and fan assisted natural ventilation to maintain an equable internal environment. Daylight is improved by a small internal atrium and roof lights. Sometimes simple, low-tech solutions are more appropriate.

Our new headquarters for Ogier, Jersey’s largest and greenest office building achieves a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment ‘Energy Assessment Method’) Environmental rating of “Very Good” and is the first office building in Jersey to do this.

Waddington Architects’ passion for Jersey’s environmental protection continues, and we are enthusiastic about designing towards “carbon-neutral” developments (creating no energy deficit from the power grid). The future depends on it.

There is a growing awareness of the value of design, not just to uplift and make our lives richer, but also as a way to help reflect and even shape our attitudes, values and behavior. Well-designed social housing can help to create better communities. Carefully articulated offices do improve staff communications and eventually productivity. Thoughtful landscape environments do improve staff well-being.

We focus on producing the best response to the brief, but we are also conscious that we have to provide value for money. Part of this is explained by the fact that as a practice we are properly resourced with a keen balance between conceptual thinking and plenty of technical experience. We actively manage effective partnerships with clients, planning authorities, developers and contractors, both here and abroad.

We are experienced in delivering projects from concept to completion, and recognise and encourage the teamwork necessary to achieve this on time, and on budget.

….good design costs no more than bad, often much less in the long-run.

We don’t waste time and we don’t take on more than we can manage. We have systems that ensure there is a modulated flow of project stages through the office, from first contact through to handover.

We listen hard; we discuss; we edge towards a shared and finely detailed understanding of the brief. We enter into a process of mutual learning.

We are currently the largest architectural practice in Jersey with approximately 15 permanent local full-time staff.

Our PI Cover of £5.0m and investment in the latest computer design and security technology ensures our client’s interests are safely protected.

We have considerable experience of partnering and working with off-Island consultants and are fully able to communicate information and drawings via e-mail  or through web-based drawing management systems.
