Western Morning News, Headquarters and Printworks, Plymouth

Offices & Commercial

Western Morning News, Headquarters and Printworks, Plymouth Mike Waddington worked in London for several years during a very fertile period of Sir Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners as a senior architect leading the design on a number of projects including the Western Morning News building in Plymouth. Completed in 1992, the sculptural, curved glass envelope houses newspaper production and printing facilities and provides 5,000 sq m of office accommodation. The printing presses are fully visible, and the offices are wrapped around a central atrium. As the sites slopes it is possible to enter building at mid-level of the atrium hub via a bridge link, which makes the working environment both efficient and sociable. All of the building services are visible, legible and celebrated. Purpose-made duct and lighting assemblies up-light the exposed concrete floor slab soffits, which in themselves serve to provide excellent thermal mass. A daring tower houses a viewing gallery and boardroom, providing views of Plymouth Sound.
