Nil Solitaire

Large-Scale Residential, Private Residential

Situated on the NW edge of St Peter’s Village, Nil Solitaire comprises the refurbishment of an existing dwelling, conversion of a former barn into a dwelling, construction of a terrace of three new dwellings and one new substantial dwelling within its own gardens to the front and rear. The new dwelling is carefully conceived and detailed as a “traditional” building, with reference to some of the islands larger residences and outbuildings circa the early 1800’s. Although a large building, the design of the house is one people will be familiar and comfortable with and find attractive and interesting, but not a house that will announce itself too forcefully. The key concepts for the new dwelling were a contemporary design using “traditional” scale, massing and proportioned fenestration and solid to void ratios. Contrasting natural granite walls, dressed render quoins with ashlars rendered walls, crisp detailing to porches, doors, fenestration and facias etc., presenting the main house on the road elevation with a formal entrance, outbuildings sited to the rear of the main building creating a “U” shaped plan enclosing a private garden with living areas giving on to it and utilizing passive winter solar gain.
